Engineering recruitment East Sussex employers need is more specialised than the county’s size suggests. Most businesses here are small: East Sussex County Council reports around 23,000 businesses, 90% of which employ nine people or fewer. But the county has a nationally important cluster in precision engineering, particularly vacuum technology and electronics, concentrated around Hastings, St Leonards and Eastbourne.

General Dynamics UK Mission Systems has worked in Hastings since 1974, and its 45,000 sq ft facility makes and tests avionics for the Typhoon, Hawk and Wildcat. Kurt J Lesker has its European headquarters in Hastings, and Photek in St Leonards makes photomultiplier tubes and image intensifiers. The county’s engineering task group brings together these firms with Edwards, Marshall-Tufflex, Interface Precision Engineering and Focus SB to tackle skills shortages.

The coast adds energy and water. RWE runs the Rampion offshore wind farm, with 116 turbines, from its operations base at Newhaven Port, and Newhaven’s Enterprise Zone targets marine and clean-growth businesses.
