UK Hiring Heat Map: Live Hiring Trends by Region

Our UK hiring heat map shows where hiring is heating up and where it is cooling down, region by region and job by job. It compares the latest fortnight of new job adverts with the fortnight before, using live data from the Bernoullis job feed, and updates every morning.

Each figure is the change in that region's share of new UK adverts for the chosen job type. A positive figure means hiring there is growing faster than in the rest of the UK. Regions with fewer than 25 adverts in either fortnight show a dash.

How to read it

How to read the hiring heat map

UK hiring heat map showing hiring trends by region

Each tile is a UK nation or region. The figure on it is the change in that region’s share of new UK adverts for the job type you picked. For example, “+12%” means the region’s slice of new adverts grew by 12% compared with the fortnight before.

  • Hot (+15% or more): hiring is growing much faster here than elsewhere.
  • Heating up (+5% to +15%): demand is picking up.
  • Steady (-5% to +5%): no real change.
  • Cooling (-5% to -15%): demand is easing.
  • Cooling fast (-15% or more): a clear slowdown compared with the rest of the UK.
Our method

Why we compare shares, not totals

Job feeds grow as new sources are added, and adverts drop out when they close. If we simply counted adverts, almost every region would look like it was booming. By comparing each region’s share of the UK total, and using the largest and steadiest UK-wide job board in our feed for the comparison, the map shows real changes in where employers are hiring.

For employers

How employers can use hiring trends

  1. Plan pay. When a region heats up for your type of role, competition for candidates rises and pay usually follows. Check your offer with our fair pay checker.
  2. Time your adverts. In a cooling region, more candidates may be looking, so it can be a good time to hire.
  3. Widen your search. If your own area is hot, consider candidates from nearby cooler regions who might relocate or commute.
  4. Show pay in your adverts. See how your area compares in our pay transparency league table.
For job seekers

How job seekers can use the heat map

If hiring for your job is heating up near you, you are in a stronger position to ask for more pay or better hours. If it is cooling, it may be worth looking a little further afield. Our commute calculator shows whether a job further away would leave you better off once travel is taken off.

UK hiring heat map FAQs

From public UK job adverts collected every night by the Bernoullis job feed. Adverts are placed in a region from their map location and grouped by job type. The fortnight comparison uses the feed’s largest UK-wide job board so that changes in feed coverage do not look like hiring changes.

We only show a change when there were at least 25 adverts for that job type in the region in both fortnights. Smaller numbers jump around too much to be useful.

Every morning. The comparison always uses the last two full weeks (Monday to Sunday) against the two weeks before. We also save a daily snapshot, so longer trends will be added over time.
