Why Yorkshire and the Humber

Why Employers Choose Specialist Engineering Recruitment in Yorkshire

Manufacturing is one of Yorkshire’s biggest strengths. Make UK’s 2025 figures show around 287,000 manufacturing jobs in Yorkshire and the Humber and £22bn of output, about 15% of the regional economy. Manufacturing wages are 17% higher than the rest of the regional economy. Chemicals, food and drink and metal products are the three largest subsectors, which is why engineering recruitment Yorkshire employers need spans process plants, production lines and heavy engineering.

The region is also changing fast. In South Yorkshire, the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) employs more than 500 researchers and engineers and anchors a cluster that includes Boeing and McLaren. On the Humber, which emits more CO2 than any other UK industrial cluster, offshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture projects are reshaping demand. In West and North Yorkshire, billions are going into rail, from the Transpennine Route Upgrade to new trains built at Goole.

Each of these shifts needs engineers who are already hard to find: composites and machining specialists, HV and offshore engineers, process engineers with COMAH experience and rail engineers with signalling or rolling stock backgrounds. Engineering jobs in Yorkshire are plentiful, but the best candidates are usually already employed. Our engineering recruitment agency in Yorkshire finds them, vets them technically and helps you make an offer that lands. The AMRC is a good place to see the region’s manufacturing ambition first-hand.

We cover all four counties: North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, including Hull, York and the Teesside towns south of the river. We recruit across every discipline, but advanced manufacturing, energy and process engineering lead our searches.

Lead sector 1

Advanced Manufacturing Jobs in Yorkshire

South Yorkshire is home to one of the UK’s most important manufacturing research clusters. The AMRC was founded in 2001 and now has more than 500 researchers and engineers. Around it, the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Rotherham hosts Boeing, McLaren’s £50m Composites Technology Centre, Rolls-Royce and the Nuclear AMRC. Boeing Sheffield, the company’s first European production site, makes actuation parts for the 737 and 767.

Heavy engineering is growing too. Sheffield Forgemasters, owned by the Ministry of Defence since 2021, is in the middle of a £1.3bn recapitalisation, the largest in its 250-year history. In the East Riding, Siemens Mobility’s £200m train factory at Goole opened in 2024 with 700 skilled jobs and will assemble most of London’s new Piccadilly line trains. These employers create advanced manufacturing jobs in Yorkshire across machining, composites, assembly, test and quality engineering.

Energy Jobs in the Humber and Across Yorkshire

The Humber is the UK’s largest industrial cluster by emissions, at more than 12 million tonnes of CO2 a year, and that makes it central to the UK’s energy transition. Siemens Gamesa opened its blade factory at Alexandra Dock in Hull in 2016 and later confirmed a £186m expansion to make blades over 100m long. Saltend Chemicals Park is developing hydrogen and sustainable fuel projects, and the Viking CCS pipeline has development consent.

Energy jobs in the Humber sit alongside major sites elsewhere in the region. Drax Power Station near Selby has a capacity of 2,595MW and now runs on biomass after coal ended in 2021. On the south bank of the Tees, Net Zero Teesside Power is a 742MW power station with carbon capture, expected to operate from 2028. Our engineering recruitment Yorkshire team recruits electrical, mechanical, HV, process and project engineers for all of them.

Lead sector 3

Process and Chemical Engineering Jobs in Yorkshire

Chemicals are the largest part of Yorkshire’s manufacturing economy. Saltend Chemicals Park in Hull covers 370 acres and makes almost 2 million tonnes of chemicals a year, with Mitsubishi Chemical building a new £250m production line. Wilton International on Teesside hosts SABIC, Lotte, Huntsman and CPI, while Syngenta’s Huddersfield site is a top-tier COMAH chemical plant with its own engineering team.

Consumer goods and life sciences add depth. Reckitt’s £105m R&D centre is in Hull, and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners runs Europe’s largest soft drinks plant by volume at Wakefield. We recruit process, chemical, validation, reliability and instrumentation engineers who understand hazardous-area, COMAH and GMP work.

Where Yorkshire’s Engineers Train

Yorkshire and the Humber has one of the strongest engineering education networks in the UK. Universities with engineering departments include Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Hull, York and Teesside. The University of Sheffield’s £81m Diamond building houses its Faculty of Engineering, and the University of Hull opens new civil engineering labs for degrees starting in 2026.

Apprenticeships are just as important. The AMRC Training Centre in Rotherham has delivered more than 1,700 apprenticeships with around 400 businesses since 2013. The South Yorkshire Institute of Technology links colleges, universities and the AMRC, and Hull College’s £5m Greenwave Centre trains engineers in hydrogen, carbon capture and renewables. These routes feed engineering jobs in Yorkshire every year.
