Why the East of England

Why Employers Choose Specialist Engineering Recruitment in the East of England

The East of England is often described as a science region, and it is, but it is also a serious manufacturing economy. Make UK counts about 229,000 manufacturing jobs here and £19bn of output, with average manufacturing pay 19% higher than in other sectors. The biggest subsectors are machinery and equipment, food and drink, and pharmaceuticals. In the year to March 2024 the East was the only English region where manufacturing employment grew. That mix of research, production and logistics is what makes engineering recruitment East of England employers ask for so varied.

Three forces are driving demand. The first is life sciences and deep tech around Cambridge, Stevenage and Hinxton, where drug discovery, cell and gene therapy, chip design and space systems all need specialist engineers. The second is energy: Sizewell C reached its £38bn final investment decision in July 2025, and several gigawatts of offshore wind are being built or planned off Norfolk and Suffolk. The third is trade and infrastructure, from Felixstowe and London Gateway to Stansted, Luton airport and East West Rail.

Each of these needs engineers who are already hard to find: validation and GMP specialists, embedded and FPGA engineers, nuclear-qualified mechanical and electrical engineers, HV and offshore technicians, and civil engineers for ports and rail. Freeport East alone targets 13,500 jobs around Felixstowe and Harwich. Our job is to find the people who can deliver this pipeline.

Our engineering recruitment agency in East Anglia and the wider region covers all six counties: Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. We cover every discipline, but life sciences, software and electronics, and energy lead our searches.

Lead sector 1

Life-Science and Biomedical Engineering Jobs in the East of England

Cambridge sits at the centre of one of Europe’s strongest life-science clusters. AstraZeneca opened its £1bn Discovery Centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in 2021, with space for more than 2,200 scientists. In July 2026 GSK announced a new flagship R&D centre on the same campus, with more than 1,000 scientists expected to move there by 2029. Cambridge South station, opened in June 2026, now serves the campus directly. South of the city, the Wellcome Genome Campus at Hinxton hosts genomics research on a global scale.

Hertfordshire adds manufacturing. Stevenage is home to the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult’s manufacturing centre and to Autolus’s £66m Nucleus plant, which makes CAR-T therapies. Engineering jobs in the East of England life-science sector cover laboratory automation, cleanroom and HVAC engineering, process and validation roles, and the building services that keep regulated sites running. We recruit engineers who understand GMP and can work alongside scientists.

Software, Electronics and Space Engineering Jobs in East Anglia and Beyond

Arm designs processor architecture from its Cambridge headquarters, and the city’s science parks host hundreds of hardware, software and AI companies. Cambridge Science Park alone has more than 170 firms on its site. Engineering jobs in East Anglia increasingly mean embedded software, chip verification, machine learning and the test engineering that sits between them.

Hertfordshire and Essex bring space and defence electronics. Airbus in Stevenage is building the landing platform for Europe’s Rosalind Franklin Mars rover under a £150m UK contract, and MBDA has its UK headquarters in the town. Teledyne e2v in Chelmsford designs imaging sensors used in space, and Leonardo designs radar and electronic warfare systems in Luton and Basildon. We recruit software, firmware, RF, systems and test engineers for all of them.

Lead sector 3

Nuclear and Offshore Wind Jobs in East Anglia

Sizewell C is the biggest clean-energy project in a generation. Its final investment decision in July 2025 committed £38bn, and more than 2,000 people were on site every day by January 2026. The project expects up to 10,000 workers at peak, 1,500 apprenticeships and around £4.4bn of spending in the region. Next door, Sizewell B has been given a life extension to 2055 and supports about 900 skilled jobs.

Offshore wind jobs in East Anglia are growing just as fast. East Anglia ONE is operating from a maintenance base in Lowestoft, East Anglia THREE is due to be fully operational by the end of 2026, and East Anglia TWO is under construction for commissioning in 2028. Off Norfolk, RWE’s Norfolk Vanguard projects won contracts for 3.1GW in January 2026. We recruit nuclear, HV, mechanical, marine and commissioning engineers for developers, contractors and the supply chain.

Hiring guide

Hiring Engineers in the East of England: What to Plan For

Big projects set the pace

Sizewell C, offshore wind and the Cambridge science parks all compete for the same electrical and mechanical engineers. We benchmark pay so your offer stands out.

Clearances take time

Defence, space and nuclear roles often need security clearance or site passes. We check eligibility before interview, not after.

London pulls on the south

Engineers in Essex and Hertfordshire can commute into London. We show them why a local role is worth staying for.

Housing costs around Cambridge and the pull of London make hiring harder in parts of the region. Good planning helps: agree the salary range early, be clear about hybrid or site-based working and give feedback quickly. Our engineering recruitment East of England team can advise on all three, and on whether a contractor could bridge the gap while you hire permanently.
