Engineering Jobs in the East Midlands at a Glance
Why Employers Choose Specialist Engineering Recruitment in the East Midlands
Manufacturing matters more to the East Midlands than to almost any other English region. Make UK’s latest regional figures show around 265,000 manufacturing jobs and £19bn of output, about 16% of the regional economy, with manufacturing wages 21% higher than the rest of the economy. Food and drink, transport equipment and rubber and plastics are the largest sectors. That breadth shapes every engineering recruitment East Midlands brief we take on.
The region is home to some of the UK’s most important engineering sites. Rolls-Royce employs more than 12,000 people in Derby across civil aerospace and submarines, and its Raynesway submarine site is doubling in size with 1,170 new jobs. Alstom’s Litchurch Lane factory in Derby is the UK’s only plant able to design, build and test trains, and Derby has been chosen as the headquarters of Great British Railways. Toyota builds Corollas at Burnaston, and Northamptonshire sits at the heart of the UK’s motorsport industry.
Energy is the next big story. The UK Atomic Energy Authority is developing STEP, a prototype fusion power plant, at West Burton in Nottinghamshire, and the former Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station is being redeveloped inside the East Midlands Freeport, the UK’s only inland freeport. On the Lincolnshire coast, offshore wind and carbon capture projects add even more demand.
Our engineering recruitment agency in the East Midlands covers all five counties: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, and Northamptonshire. We recruit in every discipline, but aerospace, mechanical and electrical engineering lead our searches.
Aerospace Jobs in the East Midlands
Derby is one of the world’s great aerospace cities. Rolls-Royce’s Civil Aerospace business is based there, and its UltraFan demonstrator reached 85,000 lb of thrust on the £90m Testbed 80 in 2023. Rolls-Royce Submarines at Raynesway makes the nuclear reactors for Royal Navy submarines and is doubling its site, backed by £2.4bn of Australian funding for the AUKUS programme. Rolls-Royce SMR is opening a £12m manufacturing development centre in Derby for small modular reactors.
Aerospace jobs in the East Midlands extend well beyond Derby. ITP Aero makes combustors and fabrications at Hucknall in Nottinghamshire, Space Park Leicester hosts Airbus, Northrop Grumman and Rolls-Royce teams, and RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire is the main Typhoon base, maintained by BAE Systems. We recruit design, manufacturing, stress, quality and nuclear engineers for all of them.
- Civil aero engine design and test
- Naval nuclear reactor manufacturing
- Small modular reactors
- Space and satellite engineering
- Military aircraft maintenance
Rail, Automotive and Motorsport Engineering
Derby claims the largest cluster of rail businesses in Europe. Alstom’s Litchurch Lane works, opened in 1876, is building new Elizabeth line trains and is the global hub for its Adessia platform, and it will fit out HS2’s new trains with Hitachi. Toyota’s Burnaston plant built 98,082 vehicles in 2024 and starts GR Corolla production in 2026. That makes rail engineering jobs in the East Midlands some of the most plentiful in the UK.
Northamptonshire is the heart of Motorsport Valley. Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains employs more than 700 people at Brixworth designing Formula 1 power units, Cosworth has been in Northampton since 1964, and the Silverstone Technology Cluster counts around 4,300 companies. We recruit design, manufacturing, test and quality engineers across rail, automotive and motorsport.
- Rolling stock design, build and test
- Vehicle assembly and quality
- Motorsport and high-performance engineering
- Machinery and construction equipment
- Rail maintenance and infrastructure
Energy and Electrical Engineering Jobs in the East Midlands
STEP at West Burton aims to prove fusion power by 2040. The first £200m design-and-build contract has been awarded, construction is expected from around 2030 with up to 8,000 on-site jobs at peak, and around 6,500 full-time jobs are expected once the plant runs. At Ratcliffe-on-Soar, the closed coal station is being redeveloped for low-carbon energy, a data centre and battery production.
Electrical engineering runs through the region. BRUSH in Loughborough makes transformers and switchgear for grid projects, Siemens Energy builds industrial gas turbines in Lincoln, and Dynex makes power semiconductors in the same city. The University of Nottingham’s Power Electronics, Machines and Control institute is one of the largest of its kind. We recruit HV, power electronics, controls and energy engineers across all five counties.
- Fusion and nuclear energy
- Grid equipment and transformers
- Gas turbines and power generation
- Power electronics and semiconductors
- Data centres and battery storage
