Groundworker Jobs and Civils Recruitment
Groundworker jobs are where every build begins. Before a brick is laid, someone has to dig, drain, set out and pour. Bernoullis recruits groundworkers, gangers, 360 excavator operators and steel fixers for housebuilders, civils contractors and groundworks firms, and checks every card before you meet anyone.
Why Use Bernoullis to Fill Groundworker Jobs?
Groundworks set the pace for the whole programme. A slow gang or an operator without the right ticket can hold up every trade that follows. We check experience, cards and references so the people you hire can get to work from day one.
We Ask What They Have Built
Drainage, foundations, kerbs, ducting or bulk earthworks? We find out exactly what each person has done, on what kind of site, so you get the right skills rather than just a job title.
CSCS, CPCS and NPORS Checked
We confirm CSCS cards, plant tickets and right to work, and speak to recent gangers or site managers before you see a CV.
Groundworks and Civils Roles We Recruit
From labourers on their first site to experienced gangers, we fill every role a groundworks contractor needs.
Groundworkers
Drainage, foundations, kerbing, paving and concrete on housing and commercial sites.
Gangers & Foremen
Lead groundworks gangs, set out work and keep the programme on track.
360 Excavator Operators
Tracked excavator drivers for bulk dig, trenching and earthworks.
Dumper & Roller Drivers
Forward tipping dumper, roller and telehandler operators.
Steel Fixers
Fix reinforcement for foundations, slabs, walls and frames.
Pipe Layers

Concrete Finishers
Pour, level and finish slabs, floors and external hard landscaping.
Civils Labourers
Support gangs on housing, road and infrastructure sites.
The Cards and Tickets We Check
Groundworks depends on safe plant and competent operatives. We check every card and ticket against the issuing scheme.
Site Cards
The card most sites ask for at induction.
- CSCS green labourer card for new starters and civils labourers.
- CSCS blue skilled worker card for qualified groundworkers.
- CSCS gold card for gangers and supervisors.
Plant Tickets
Proof an operator can run the machine safely.
- CPCS or NPORS cards for 360 excavators, both above and below 10 tonnes.
- Forward tipping dumper, roller and telehandler categories.
- Slinger signaller tickets for lifting operations.
Training & NVQs
Qualifications that sit behind each card.
- NVQ Level 2 in groundworks, highways maintenance or steel fixing.
- Street works (NRSWA) and cable avoidance (CAT and Genny) training.
- Confined space and first aid tickets where needed.
Groundworker Jobs UK: Why Good Gangs Are Hard to Find
The CITB Construction Workforce Outlook 2026–2030 forecasts that infrastructure and public housing will be among the fastest-growing parts of UK construction to 2030. Both depend on groundworks, and both compete for the same experienced operatives.
Major projects such as HS2, which now employs around 33,000 people, soak up plant operators and civils teams. That pushes up demand for 360 excavator jobs and steel fixer jobs on smaller sites too.
Good groundworkers rarely need to look for work. They move for steady hours, fair rates and a site that is well run. We find those people through our network and explain your site honestly, so they can say yes quickly.
Why contractors choose us
- Consultants who understand civils and groundworks
- CSCS, CPCS and NPORS cards checked first
- Shortlists of two or three, not piles of CVs
- PAYE, CIS and day-rate operatives
- Free site visit to understand your project
- Fixed-fee and subscription pricing options
- One 60-day guarantee on every plan

Permanent, Contract and Temporary Groundworks Recruitment
Groundworks peaks at the start and end of every job. We fill permanent roles as well as short-term and day-rate cover.
Permanent operatives
Groundworkers and gangers who will move with you from site to site, with two or three strong candidates per role.
Day-rate and CIS
Experienced groundworkers and plant operators on day rates for project starts and peaks.
Temporary cover
Short-term labour and operators for holidays, sickness and busy periods.
How to Hire Groundworkers: A Practical Guide
Start with the work. Drainage, kerbing and bulk earthworks need different skills, and a good drainage gang is not always strong on slabs. List the tasks, the plant on site and the type of project.
Next, be clear about cards and tickets. Most sites need a CSCS card, and every plant operator needs the right CPCS or NPORS category. Ask for utility awareness and street works training on live roads.
Then think about pay and travel. Rates for groundworkers vary widely by region, and operatives compare offers from neighbouring sites. Clear rates and steady hours win more people than vague promises.
Finally, start small if you can. A short trial on a real task tells you more than any interview.
What we assess
- Drainage, foundation and external works experience
- Valid CSCS, CPCS or NPORS cards
- Plant categories and machine sizes
- Reading levels, drawings and setting out
- Safety record around plant and services
- References from recent gangers and site managers

Groundworker Jobs: Your Questions Answered
What do groundworker jobs involve?
Groundworkers prepare a site before building starts and finish the external works at the end. Typical tasks include excavation, drainage, foundations, kerbs, paving, ducting and concrete work.
What card do I need to work as a groundworker?
Most sites ask for a CSCS card. New starters usually hold the green labourer card, while qualified operatives hold the blue skilled worker card after an NVQ Level 2 in groundworks or a similar trade.
What tickets do I need for 360 excavator jobs?
Most contractors ask for a CPCS or NPORS card for 360 excavators, ideally the above 10 tonne category. Many also want slinger signaller and utility awareness tickets.
Is a 360 digger the same as a 360 excavator?
Yes. People search for 360 digger jobs and 360 excavator jobs interchangeably. Both describe a tracked excavator whose cab and arm rotate a full 360 degrees.
Do you recruit for steel fixer jobs?
Yes. We recruit steel fixers and chargehands for foundations, slabs, frames, bridges and infrastructure, on both PAYE and day-rate terms.
Can I start as a groundworker with no experience?
Yes. Many groundworkers start as labourers on civils or housing sites, then train on the job towards an NVQ and plant tickets.
Do you have groundworks roles on infrastructure projects?
Yes. As well as housing and commercial sites, we recruit gangs and operatives for road, rail, utilities and major infrastructure work.
Can you supply a full groundworks gang?
Yes. We can recruit a ganger, groundworkers, plant operators and labourers together so the team is ready to start as one.
