Graduate Nurse Jobs: RCN Says New Nurses Are Shut Out of a Third of Band 5 Roles

New nursing graduates are struggling to find their first post, even with thousands of vacancies. Here is what the RCN found and what newly qualified nurses can do.

Jobs as a healthcare assistant: hospital staff supporting a patient at the bedside

Spend five minutes on any UK nursing forum this year and you will see the same worry again and again: newly qualified, registered, ready to work, and no job offer. Graduate nurse jobs have become one of the biggest talking points in nursing, and new figures from the Royal College of Nursing show it is not just bad luck. The system is making it harder than it should be.

What the RCN Found About Graduate Nurse Jobs

In a release on 27 August 2026, the RCN looked at Band 5 nursing vacancies advertised in England in July (RCN). Band 5 is the entry-level pay band for registered nurses, so it is where nearly every new graduate starts.

It found that 33% of those adverts asked for experience that ruled out new graduates. Only 26% of the jobs, 82 out of 317, were full time, permanent and open to people without experience. In the East of England and in Yorkshire and the Humber, the figure was just 13%, or 4 out of 30.

A Freedom of Information request also found that advertised Band 5 nursing and midwifery roles in London fell by 68% between 2019 to 2020 and 2024 to 2025.

Shortage of Nurses, Shortage of Jobs

If that sounds odd, it is. The RCN points out that more than 20,000 full-time equivalent nursing posts were unfilled in NHS England at the same time. The problem is not that nurses are not needed. It is that trusts are not funding or advertising enough posts that new graduates can actually apply for.

The RCN also says the graduate guarantee launched in August 2025 fell well short of what was promised. Students described applying for dozens of roles without getting an interview.

The Same Story in Scotland

It is not only England. On 12 October 2026, the RCN Student Committee in Scotland wrote to the Chief Nursing Officer asking when the Scottish Government will bring in the NHS job guarantee promised in the 2026 election manifesto (RCN Scotland). Students also raised concerns about the real-terms value of the £10,000 nursing student bursary.

What the RCN Wants to Change

  • An urgent plan to get graduates into posts, including fixing unfair application requirements and wrongly banded jobs
  • An end to Band 5 adverts that ask for experience new graduates cannot have
  • Full funding for trusts to recruit enough staff
  • Relocation funding for graduates who have to move to find work
  • Priority for new graduates on bank shifts, followed by a guaranteed permanent role

What Nursing Graduates Can Do Right Now

While the policy arguments play out, you still need a job. A few practical things help:
