Why the North East

Why Employers Choose Specialist Engineering Recruitment in the North East

Manufacturing matters more to the North East than to most English regions. Make UK reports around 121,000 manufacturing jobs here, 14.1% of all employment, and the sector produced £9.7bn of output in 2023. The region exported £14.2bn of goods in the year to mid-2025, and more than half of that was machinery and transport equipment. Chemicals made up another fifth. That is the backdrop for every engineering recruitment North East employer we work with.

Three shifts are reshaping demand. Electrification is changing the car plants around Sunderland, where Nissan builds the new Leaf and AESC has opened a battery gigafactory. Offshore wind has turned the Tyne and Blyth into energy ports, with subsea cables now made at Cambois. On Teesside, carbon capture and new power projects sit alongside the chemical and pharmaceutical plants that make the area one of the UK’s largest process clusters.

Each shift needs engineers with skills that are already scarce: high-voltage and battery experience, offshore and marine certification, process safety and GMP know-how. The Employer Skills Survey found that about 13% of North East employers had a hard-to-fill vacancy, and more than a third of those were caused by a lack of skills. Engineering recruitment in the North East is therefore about finding people who can step into complex work quickly. Invest North East England tracks the investment behind this demand; we find the engineers to deliver it.

Our engineering recruitment agency in the North East works across all three counties: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham, including Darlington, Hartlepool and Stockton. We cover every discipline, but energy, automotive manufacturing and process engineering lead our searches.

Lead sector 1

Offshore Wind Jobs in the North East: Energy Recruitment

The North East helped start the UK offshore wind industry: the first offshore turbines in UK waters were installed off Blyth in 2000. Today Dogger Bank, described by its owners as the world’s largest offshore wind farm at 3.6GW, is run from an operations and maintenance base at the Port of Tyne with more than 400 long-term jobs. JDR Cables opened a £130m factory at Cambois in June 2026, the only UK facility that makes high-voltage subsea cable from start to finish.

Offshore wind jobs in the North East now cover design, fabrication, cable manufacturing, marine operations and turbine maintenance. On Teesside, Net Zero Teesside Power reached its final investment decision in December 2024: a 742MW gas power station with carbon capture, expected to operate from 2028. Hartlepool power station is extended to 2028, and Centrica and X-energy plan advanced modular reactors at Hartlepool. Our engineering recruitment North East team recruits electrical, mechanical, HV and project engineers for all of them.

Manufacturing Jobs in the North East: Automotive and Rail

Nissan has built cars in Sunderland since 1986 and employs more than 6,000 people there. Its £1bn EV36Zero programme brings together electric vehicles, renewable energy and battery production, and the third-generation Leaf entered production in December 2025. Next door, AESC’s gigafactory opened with 15.8GWh of capacity and expects around 1,000 jobs. The North East Automotive Alliance says the region’s automotive sector employs more than 30,000 people.

Rail is the second pillar. Hitachi’s £82m factory at Newton Aycliffe builds intercity trains and won a £300m order in 2025, while Tyne and Wear Metro has taken delivery of 46 new Stadler trains. Cummins in Darlington employs more than 1,900 people and assembles over 250 engines a day. These employers create thousands of manufacturing jobs in the North East, from production and maintenance engineering to quality, automation and supplier development.

Lead sector 3

Process and Chemical Engineering Jobs in the North East

NEPIC, the region’s process industry cluster, describes the North East as the largest process cluster in the UK. Teesside, Billingham and Hartlepool host chemicals, speciality materials and biologics, while Northumberland adds pharmaceutical manufacturing at Cramlington, Morpeth and Alnwick. Fujifilm Diosynth’s £100m expansion at Billingham tripled its microbial manufacturing capacity, and CPI runs the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre in Darlington.

Process work is changing fast. The Northern Endurance Partnership will transport and store up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 a year from Net Zero Teesside Power, and Teesside Freeport covers 4,500 acres with a target of more than 18,000 jobs. We recruit process, chemical, validation and instrumentation engineers who understand COMAH, GMP and hazardous-area work.

Where North East Engineers Train

The North East has five universities with engineering departments: Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland, Durham and Teesside. Durham’s engineering department ranks sixth in the UK in the Guardian’s 2026 guide, and Newcastle University leads research into electric propulsion and digital manufacturing.

Technical training is expanding to match new industries. The £15m Energy Central Learning Hub in Blyth opened in 2025 to train offshore wind technicians and engineers. Newcastle College is expanding its Energy Academy in Wallsend to triple its intake, Gateshead College runs a low-carbon vehicle centre next to its test track in Washington, and Darlington College opened its £3m Ingenium engineering centre in 2024. These routes feed engineering jobs in the North East every year.
