Pall Aerospace Earns Gold Accreditation for Engineering Apprenticeships

How listening to apprentices took the Redruth site from Silver to Gold

Pall Aerospace's site in Redruth has become the first employer in Cornwall to achieve Gold status under the Next Gen Makers Engineering Apprenticeships: Employer Accreditation. Announced in September 2026, the award recognises employers that consistently give apprentices a strong experience and act on what their apprentices tell them.

What Gold accreditation means

The accreditation is backed by Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation. Employers are assessed mainly on feedback from their current apprentices, gathered through satisfaction surveys, and are benchmarked against other employers. Gold, or Excellent Employer status, is awarded to organisations that show a consistently strong apprentice experience and a clear commitment to responding to feedback.

From Silver to Gold in a year

Pall Aerospace first achieved Silver status in 2025, missing out on Gold by less than one point. Looking at the feedback, the company found that mentoring meetings with apprentices needed to improve.

It introduced monthly meetings between apprentices and programme leaders, alongside regular catch-ups with apprenticeship manager Daniel Strong. Those changes helped the Redruth site reach Gold in 2026, a good example of how small, practical changes can transform an apprenticeship programme.

Four decades of engineering apprentices

Around 20 apprentices are currently training at Redruth across a four-year programme, and 102 engineering apprentices have trained at the site since 1985.

Daniel Strong said the aim is to develop apprentices with the skills to do the job they are trained for in any business and apply those skills anywhere, rather than only training future Pall employees. It is an approach that builds loyalty and strengthens the wider engineering community in Cornwall.

Apprenticeships and the aerospace skills gap

Aerospace manufacturing relies on highly skilled technicians and engineers, from precision machining and inspection to testing and quality assurance. Well-run apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to grow that talent, especially in regions where experienced engineers are harder to find.
