How to Write an Engineering CV That Gets Interviews

Hiring managers often spend less than a minute on a first read of a CV, so make the important information easy to find. Start with a short profile that says what kind of engineer you are, your key specialisms and the type of role you want next. Follow it with your experience in reverse order, focusing on projects, responsibilities and results rather than a list of duties.

Be specific about tools, standards and qualifications. If you use SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Revit, MATLAB or a particular PLC platform, say so. List relevant standards such as BS 7671, ISO 9001 or AS9100, and give the status of your chartership or professional registration. Numbers help too: the value of projects you have delivered, the size of teams you have led or the savings you have made.

Keep it to two pages where possible, use a clear layout without heavy graphics, and save it as a PDF or Word document. Finally, tailor the first half of your CV to each role you apply for. It takes a few minutes and makes a big difference to how quickly your application is shortlisted.

Not sure your CV is ready? Run it through our CV checker. You get a score out of 100, the fixes that matter most and expert hints and tips in about a minute. Paste in the job advert and it will also show the keywords you are missing.

    Market insight

    The UK Engineering Job Market

Demand for engineers remains strong across the country. Infrastructure programmes, the energy transition, advanced manufacturing, defence and digital technology all compete for experienced people, which is good news if you are looking for engineering jobs UK employers value. Many businesses report that skilled candidates are in short supply, so engineers with the right mix of technical skills and experience often have a choice of roles.

That demand is not spread evenly. Renewable energy, water, rail and power networks continue to grow, while aerospace, defence and medical devices look for engineers who can work in regulated, highly documented environments. Controls, automation and software skills are increasingly valued across every discipline, as more equipment becomes connected and data-driven.

Flexible working has also changed the market. Design and consultancy roles are more likely to offer hybrid working, while site, plant and manufacturing roles remain mostly on-site, often with shift allowances or overtime. Knowing what you want from your next move – salary, location, work pattern, progression or a particular type of project – will help us match you with the right engineering jobs UK-wide, rather than simply the nearest vacancy.

    Career development

Planning Your Next Step as an Engineer

The right move can do more than increase your salary. Before you apply, think about where you want to be in three to five years. If chartered status is a goal, look for employers with a structured development scheme and a mentor who is already registered with the relevant institution, such as the ICE, IMechE, IET or IChemE.

Consider the breadth of experience a role will give you. Moving from a contractor to a consultancy, from maintenance into design or from a large organisation to a smaller one can accelerate your development, because you will often take on wider responsibility sooner. Equally, a larger employer may offer specialist training, international projects and clearer promotion routes.

Our consultants can talk through these choices with you in confidence. We will give you an honest view of how a role fits your plans, even if the answer is that it is not the right move yet.

    Interview advice

Tips to Stand Out at an Engineering Interview

Preparation is the easiest way to make a strong impression. Our consultants will brief you before every interview.

    Research the employer

Read about their projects, products and customers, and think about how your experience fits what they do.

    Prepare project examples

Choose two or three projects you can explain in detail: the problem, your role, the technical approach and the outcome.

    Expect technical questions

Many engineering interviews include a technical discussion or task. Revisit the fundamentals of your discipline.

    Show your safety mindset

Employers value engineers who think about risk and safety. Be ready to give an example.

    Ask good questions

Ask about the team, current projects, training and progression. It shows genuine interest.

    Follow up

Tell your consultant how it went straight away, so they can pass on feedback and keep things moving.
