Healthcare Unemployment in 2026: Why Graduate Nurses Struggle While Care Still Has 96,000 Vacancies

New nurses are being shut out of entry-level jobs while social care still has tens of thousands of vacancies. Here is what the latest figures show.

Healthcare unemployment sounds like a contradiction. The NHS and social care have been short of staff for years, yet in 2026 many newly qualified nurses and other health graduates are struggling to find their first job. This article looks at what the latest figures from the ONS, the Royal College of Nursing and Skills for Care actually show, and what graduates can do about it.

The Big Picture: UK Unemployment in Autumn 2026

UK unemployment was 4.7% in June to August 2026, and vacancies across the economy fell to 691,000 in July to September (ONS Labour market overview, October 2026). Vacancies fell in 14 of 18 industries over the quarter (ONS Vacancies and jobs in the UK, October 2026).

A quick note on the data. The Office for National Statistics does not publish a monthly unemployment rate for each industry, so to judge how a sector is doing we look at the official vacancy figures alongside hiring surveys and graduate job data from named sources. Every figure below links to where it came from.

Graduate Nurses Are Being Shut Out

In August 2026 the Royal College of Nursing said graduates were blocked from at least a third of entry-level nursing jobs in England, because 33% of Band 5 posts advertised in July asked for experience new graduates could not have. Its audit found that only 26% of jobs advertised in England (82 out of 317) were full time, permanent and open to applicants without professional experience. The same release says more than 20,000 full-time equivalent nursing posts were unfilled in NHS England (RCN press release, 27 August 2026).

In Wales, the RCN said 306 nursing graduates were not allocated an NHS Wales post after the first stage of the job-matching process in June 2026 (RCN Wales, 25 June 2026). We covered the wider picture in our article on graduate nurse jobs.

Social Care Vacancies Are Falling but Still High

Adult social care in England had a vacancy rate of 6.2% in 2025/26, the lowest since 2015/16, according to Skills for Care. That still means around 96,000 vacancies on any given day. International recruitment fell to 30,000, the lowest in four years (LocalGov, reporting Skills for Care).

Recruiters report demand too. The KPMG and REC Report on Jobs for September 2026 found nursing, medical and care roles were one of only three areas where temporary vacancies grew (KPMG and REC, via Onrec).

What This Means for Health and Nursing Graduates

The jobs exist, but not always where graduates are looking or at the level they want. Adzuna’s summer 2026 data showed fewer graduate vacancies in healthcare and nursing than a year earlier (Magica, reporting Adzuna data). That makes it worth widening your search to independent providers, community services, care homes with nursing, GP practices and private clinics, as well as NHS trusts.

Your CV has to work hard, because many Band 5 adverts ask for experience. Placements count. Describe the wards, patient groups and procedures you saw on placement, the competencies you signed off and any care work you did alongside your studies. Our guide to newly qualified nurse jobs covers six options worth considering.

Start With a Free CV Check

When competition for each job is tighter, small CV problems cost more interviews. Our free CV check gives you a score and practical feedback on structure, content and how well an applicant tracking system can read your CV. It costs nothing, takes a couple of minutes and you do not need a subscription to use it.

Health graduates often write placement experience as a single line. The feedback will help you turn it into evidence: the settings you worked in, the patients you cared for and the skills you were signed off for.

Once your CV is in shape, our CV Job Matcher can search a large UK job feed for healthcare jobs that fit your skills and location, and suggest roles you could move into with the experience you already have.

Coming Soon: A Work Diary App to Help Graduates Build Stronger CVs

We are building a new app with graduates and early-career jobseekers in mind. The hardest part of a first CV is remembering, and proving, what you have actually done. The app will let you log your daily tasks as you go, whether that is a placement, a project, a part-time job or your first graduate role, so the detail is captured while it is fresh. For a student nurse or new graduate, that could be each placement shift, the procedures you observed or carried out, the feedback you received and every course and certificate you completed.

It will also keep your certificates in one place. When you apply for a job, the app will use your whole work diary to build a CV tailored to that role, drawing on everything you have done rather than what you happen to remember on the day.

Over time, a steady record like this is designed to help you write a stronger CV, show real progress to employers and widen the range of jobs you can apply for with confidence. No app can promise a particular job, but a better evidence base gives you a better chance at every application. The app is still in development and is not available yet. We will share news on this blog when it launches.
