Ask anyone how to get into construction and the first thing they will tell you is to sort your card. Questions about how to get a CSCS card come up again and again on UK construction forums, usually from people who have been offered a start and suddenly realise they cannot get on site without one. The good news is that it is not complicated once you know the order to do things in.
What Is a CSCS Card?
CSCS stands for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. A CSCS card shows that you have the right training and qualifications for the work you do on site, and that you have passed a health and safety test. It is not a legal requirement, but most principal contractors and housebuilders ask for one before they let you on site.
There are different cards for different jobs. Labourers usually need the green card. Skilled tradespeople, supervisors, managers and professionals have their own cards, which need the matching qualifications.
How to Get a CSCS Card: The Green Labourer Card
For most new starters the green CSCS card is the one to go for. To get it you need to:
Step 1: Do the Level 1 Health and Safety Award
This is usually a one-day course, run by colleges and training providers across the country. It covers the basics of staying safe on site: manual handling, working at height, hazardous substances and what to do if something goes wrong. Many people find it useful even beyond the card, because it gives you the language that site managers use.
Some Jobcentres and councils fund this course for people who are out of work, so it is worth asking before you pay for it yourself.
Step 2: Book and Pass the HS&E Test
The HS&E test is a multiple-choice test taken on a computer at a test centre. You book it through CITB. Revise using the official test materials rather than random question banks, because the questions are drawn from the official content. Give yourself a week or two of practice if you are not used to exams. Plenty of people pass first time with a bit of preparation.
Step 3: Apply for Your CSCS Card
Once you have both the qualification and the test pass, you can apply for the card online through the CSCS website. You will need your test ID and proof of your qualification. Cards usually arrive by post, and CSCS also offers a digital version you can show on your phone.
Only ever apply through the official CSCS website. There are lots of third-party sites that look official but charge extra for doing what you could do yourself.
Which CSCS Card Do You Need if You Have a Trade?
If you already have an NVQ or apprenticeship in a trade, you may qualify for a higher card straight away, such as the blue skilled worker card. Supervisors and managers need the right level of NVQ or a relevant degree for the gold and black cards. Your qualifications decide the card, so check the CSCS card finder before booking your test, as some cards need a different version of the HS&E test.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking the wrong HS&E test. Operatives, specialists and managers each have their own version.
- Letting your test lapse. Your pass must be less than two years old when you apply.
- Paying a middleman. Apply direct to CSCS.
- Forgetting to renew. The green card lasts five years, and you can renew in the six months either side of the expiry date.
