Changing Engineering Jobs for More Pay: 6 Questions to Ask Before You Move

Comfortable job or better pay elsewhere? It is one of the most common dilemmas for engineers. Here are six questions to help you decide whether to move.

Stay in a comfortable job or move for better money? It is one of the most common questions on engineering and tech career forums, and there is rarely a simple answer. If you are thinking about changing engineering jobs for more pay, these six questions will help you make a decision you will be happy with in a year's time.

1. How Much More Is It, Really?

Look at the whole package, not just the salary. Compare pension contributions, bonus, overtime rates, car or travel allowance, holiday, private healthcare and any shift or call-out pay. A higher salary with a weaker pension or no overtime can leave you worse off. Write both offers side by side.

2. What Will It Cost You in Time?

A longer commute, more travel or a site-based role can eat into the extra money and your free time. Work out the real cost of travel and how many extra hours a week it adds. Hybrid working, flexible hours or a four-day option can be worth a lot more than they look on paper.

3. Will You Learn and Progress?

The best career moves add to your skills, not just your bank balance. Will the new role give you experience in a growing area, such as power systems, automation or major projects? Will it support chartership? Is there a clear route to the next level? Sometimes the job that pays slightly less now is the one that pays far more in five years.

4. Why Do You Want to Leave?

Be honest with yourself. If pay is the only problem, it may be worth raising it with your current employer first. If it is the work, the culture or the manager, more money elsewhere may not fix how you feel. People who move only for money often find the same frustrations follow them.

5. What Will You Do if They Counter Offer?

Many employers make a counter offer when a good engineer resigns. Before you hand in your notice, decide what you would do. If your reasons for leaving go beyond pay, a counter offer rarely solves them. If it is genuinely just about money, a fair counter offer might be the right result. Either way, avoid using a job offer only as a bargaining chip, as it can damage trust on both sides.

6. Is the Timing Right?

Think about where you are in a project. Leaving in the middle of a critical delivery phase can affect your reputation, and engineering is a small world. Check your notice period, any training repayment clauses and when your bonus is paid. A short delay can sometimes be worth it.

Making the Decision on Changing Engineering Jobs

If the new role offers better pay, a reasonable commute, room to grow and a culture you like, it is probably the right move. If it only offers more money, think carefully. Our salary negotiation guide for engineers can help you get the best deal either way.
